Sneak Peak

hello south county…

i want to give you the opportunity to hear about/be a part of something very exciting in the early stages.

we are currently in the process of praying through and assessing how God may want us to be involved in the lives of the people in our “next door neighborhood” of via lomas. if you don’t know where that is, it’s the next driveway down from the community center.

after praying and seeking god about where our campus might best be used to make a difference in south orange county, signs are pointing to the possibility of a relationship with the people and community of via lomas. we don’t know what it may look like yet as we’re still in the early stages of trying to see exactly how god may want to use us and teach us through this relationship, but if you’re interested in hearing more about it and how you might be involved, please come to the informational meeting ::

saturday, june 19, 11 am
to rsvp and get the address, please send us a message using our contact form.

see you sunday…
chad

hey south county…

so, we did it! church in a house happened all over south county yesterday. well done!

i have already heard reports from many leaders saying what a great experience it was and many people wanting and hoping for future chances to do this again.

jenn and i met with about 17 or so adults and three kids in a home and had a great morning. the best way i can describe our day was that there was just something that felt very “right” about it. things were very simple and yet profound. we opened god’s word, discussed it, prayed, took communion and then sang together. it was such a joyful sound to hear everyone sing out together in a living room.

we met people or discovered some who live in our neighborhood and didn’t even know it. and now we won’t forget each others’ names with the help of some sweet adjectives – kooky, dr., humongous, dramatic…on and on….

so… great, great, great job everyone. i look forward to hearing more stories this coming week.

what a strong community god is building. jenn and i love being a part of this with you.

see you soon,
chad

Church in a House

what is it?
on sunday, june 13 we will have our weekend services in homes across south orange county instead of the gym at laguna hills high school. the meeting time will still be at 10am.

what do i do today?
go find your city on one of the maps on the patio.  get a thumbtack with a number on it located in the bin next to the map.  take that and place it on the map showing the location of your home.  on the sheet next to the map, simply write your contact information and your thumbtack number.

what happens next?
we will be placing approximately 5 families in each group based on geographic proximity. you will be emailed within a week with the names of others in your group and who will be leading the time on june 13th.

what do i do on june 13?
after the initial email, you will receive at least one follow up email from your group  leader letting you know the location of the gathering. the elements of the gathering will include :: worship, opening god’s word together, communion and a time to respond.

what about kids?
these gatherings will be for the whole family. we are working with our family ministry to make certain that these gatherings engage all ages.

wait! i have more questions!
cool. see one of the leaders next to the maps on the patio or email southcounty@rockharbor.org.

a dreaded question

hey south county…
i’m sitting at panera bread doing emails/bills and chewing trident watermelon gum.  sugerfree will never measure up.

sitting at a booth directly in front of me is a high school girl and her father.  she isn’t feeling well and goes back and forth from slurping a little bit of soup to laying in the booth.  not sure how real the sickness is.  the father is extremely quiet and when he speaks it’s not audible to me – though i’m trying.  it’s clear that there is someone in the father’s life that the girl doesn’t approve of, hence the statement “i will never like her.”  the girl continues to try and discover the origin of her illness by retracing a sushi lunch and confirming that it wasn’t because she was drinking – because she wasn’t.  she then tells her father some “good news” that she isn’t smoking anymore because “she’s over it”.

a few more exchanges that i didn’t pay attention to because of extreme concentration on my southern california gas company bill, and then the words from the girl to her father out of nowhere that brought on the reason for this blog ::

“i love you very much.”
beat, pause.
“do you love me?”

it was horrible to hear that.

this girl is screaming for attention and hiding and lashing out and begging all in 15 minutes over half-eaten tomato soup.  i don’t know what the father said because the volume on his vocals was still at about a two…but that’s not the point.  the point is that she had to ask.

so here’s our encouragement in all of this.  as representations of jesus to our children, let us make sure that they never have to ask us the same question.  no, we will not say the right thing every time, give the right advice in all circumstances or correctly discern between time-outs and spankings.
but we can love.  we can love.

i truly believe that if our children grow up knowing they are loved, it will help cover a multitude of “misses” by all their broken and imperfect parents. that’s what i pray for.

see you soon,
Chad
